War of the Dead
As a young dwarf barely a year into my apprenticeship I was pounding away at the forge one day when the floor started shaking. Just a little rumble at first. As this was quite common none of us paid much attention to it. As the rumbling got worse I gave a quick look over to our master. He was staring at the wall next to me with a confused look on his face. All of the sudden the shaking got very violent and his eyes changed… Fear!? Something hit me on the shoulder. I looked down and noticed it was a piece of the ceiling. The noise was incredible. I saw master’s eyes closed and his lips moving. Then I heard the loudest boom I ever heard in my life and I feel like I have been swallowed. I awoke to a small pain in my arm. What’s this – bees in dwarf heaven. I then realized I was on the side of a mountain and not dead. In fact besides the bee sting I wasn’t hurt at all. I guess I can’t lay here all day so I better get moving. There is no reason to go up so down I go. A few hours later the sun was starting to set so I better keep my eyes open for shelter. Off in the distance I spy a cave entrance. Maybe it’s a way back home. As I approach the cave I stop and can’t walk any further. My knees begin to shake and no matter what I think of I just can’t go in there. I find some bushes and crawl in for the night. It all hit me like a ton of bricks. I just lost everything and everyone and no matter what I can’t sleep with all the lights in the sky and the thought of being on my own. As the sun came up I hit the trail again and follow it to the bottom of the mountain. I have no where to go so I stay on the trail till I come to a road. As I was trying to figure out which way to go to turn I hear some kind of animal and clomping sounds. I was scared as I had no weapons but stood my ground. Around the corner comes a group of humans. Some riding horses and a few on the front of two huge wagons. Traders. I’ve heard of them in the stories around the hearth and good amount of our gold comes from them. Their leader approaches me with his hand on the hilt of his sword and asks me if I’m looking for trouble in the common tongue. I say no and hold my hands up. He nods to someone in the trees. ??? A half elven woman walks out behind me relaxing her bow. Their leader asks what’s a dwarf doing wandering the forest with no weapons in goblin infested country? I don’t know what to say, so I tell him the truth. He draws his sword and approaches me. Then lets out a big “HAR” and says “I like you, can you fix this?” and shows me his bent and crooked sword. I tell him it would take a few days, but I could make it better then when he got it. He says “This stuff here is headed to Boltacs in the city of Gradsul if you’d like to join us.” What else was I going do? Wait for goblins to find and eat me?
